History
Merit Health River Oaks has been an integral part of the Jackson Metropolitan Area since 1981, when a group of physicians envisioned a new type of hospital that would offer patient-centered care and allow them to play a vital role in its operations.
Merit Health River Oaks opened in Flowood on January 6, 1981, with 100 licensed beds. Approximately 190 medical staff members were on board when the hospital opened. The hospital was partially owned by outside investors until October 1986 when Merit Health River Oaks purchased all stock for total individual (non-corporate) ownership.
In August 1994, Merit Health River Oaks acquired Merit Health Woman's Hospital. This acquisition provided obstetrics, women's health services and additional bed capacity. In November 1994, Merit Health River Oaks opened The Baby Suites, the only LDRP family-centered obstetrical unit at that time in the Jackson area. Merit Health River Oaks currently operates with 160 patient beds.
With a range of medical services, a quick-response emergency department and a convenient location in Flowood near downtown Jackson, Merit Health River Oaks serves as a major healthcare resource for the Jackson Metropolitan Area and central Mississippi.
