Why Choose Us
The bariatric program at Merit Health River Oaks is accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program.
What does this mean?
This organization has a strict set of standards that must be met before a hospital can receive this distinct seal of approval. MBSQIP's rigorous review process helps ensure hospitals have all components in place to produce the best outcomes for patients. This includes:
-
Staff specially trained to treat morbidly obese patients, including the surgeon, nurses, radiologists, anesthesiologists, nutritionists and psychologists.
-
Specialized equipment and accommodations (such as patient rooms with enlarged doorways and bathrooms) that help provide a safe and comfortable hospital stay.
-
Most importantly, patient experiences and outcomes are evaluated and must also meet a high standard.
Being awarded this accreditation conveys our commitment and ability to provide high quality bariatric care

Care
We know it can be difficult to take the first step toward obtaining weight-loss surgery. Staff at the Merit Health Weight Loss Clinic will do everything possible to help you feel supported and encouraged:
-
We offer a free online bariatric seminar that is a “no strings attached” opportunity to learn more about your options. You will learn about the various weight-loss procedures, including the advantages and disadvantages of each.
-
If you decide you’d like to take the next step, we will verify insurance coverage and contact you with any obstacles prior to your first appointment with our nurse practitioner.
- The coordinator will guide you through each step of the process, and there is a multidisciplinary team on-site for one-stop convenience.
-
Prior to surgery, you will meet with your surgeon to receive preparation instructions and to review the procedure and what to expect.
-
After surgery, the bariatric surgical coordinator will meet with you before discharge to help plan your recovery. Your diet, supplements, activity and lifestyle changes will all be reviewed. After discharge, the coordinator will also call to check on you and evaluate your progress, and will be available by phone throughout your recovery to answer any questions you may have.
-
We will keep your physicians informed. Bariatric surgery is about more than just losing weight; it’s about freeing yourself from health issues that are associated with obesity—such as high blood pressure, diabetes and sleep apnea. We will keep your primary care doctor and any specialists up-to-date on your progress so everyone is working together for your benefit.
-
We offer ongoing support and guidance, including a monthly support group where you can gain insights and encouragement from other participants as you work to achieve your weight-loss goals.
We look forward to supporting you on this journey!
